Starlight Symphony

Quilt Pattern: “Starlight Symphony”

Finished Size: 60 inches x 72 inches

Materials:

  • 1 charm pack (or assorted 5-inch squares) of coordinating fabrics
  • 2 yards of background fabric (light solid or subtle print)
  • 1/2 yard of fabric for inner border
  • 1 1/4 yards of fabric for outer border and binding
  • 4 yards of fabric for backing
  • Batting (at least 64 inches x 76 inches)
  • Thread to match fabrics
  • Quilt ruler, rotary cutter, and cutting mat
  • Sewing machine with quilting foot

Block Construction:

Step 1: Cutting:

  1. From the background fabric, cut:
  • Thirty-six (36) squares measuring 6.5 inches x 6.5 inches
  • Twelve (12) squares measuring 5 inches x 5 inches
  • Twelve (12) rectangles measuring 2.5 inches x 6.5 inches (for sashing)
  1. From the inner border fabric, cut:
  • Four (4) strips measuring 1.5 inches x width of fabric (WOF)

Step 2: Piecing the Star Blocks:

  1. Select 12 charm squares for the star centers. Cut each square diagonally once to create 24 triangles.
  2. Pair each triangle with a background 5-inch square. Sew together along the diagonal, trim seam allowance to 1/4 inch, and press open.
  3. Arrange the pieced triangles and squares to form a star pattern. Sew together to form 12 star blocks. Each block should measure 6.5 inches x 6.5 inches unfinished.

Step 3: Assembling the Quilt Top:

  1. Arrange the star blocks in a 4 x 3 layout.
  2. Add 2.5 inches x 6.5 inches background rectangles as sashing between the blocks, creating vertical sashing strips.
  3. Sew the blocks and sashing together to form three rows. Press seams toward the sashing.
  4. Sew the rows together, nesting seams to ensure points match where sashing meets blocks.

Step 4: Adding Borders:

  1. Attach the 1.5-inch inner border strips to the quilt sides first, then top and bottom. Press seams towards the borders.

Step 5: Finishing:

  1. Measure your quilt top to determine the size of the outer border strips needed. Cut strips accordingly and sew to the quilt edges.
  2. Press seams towards the outer border.
  3. Prepare your backing by piecing together the fabric to match the dimensions of your quilt top, and layer with batting and quilt top.
  4. Quilt as desired, either by hand or machine.
  5. Square up the quilt edges, and add binding strips cut 2.5 inches wide from the outer border fabric.
  6. Attach binding using your preferred method (machine or hand stitching).
