Quilt Pattern: “Starlight Symphony”
Finished Size: 60 inches x 72 inches
Materials:
- 1 charm pack (or assorted 5-inch squares) of coordinating fabrics
- 2 yards of background fabric (light solid or subtle print)
- 1/2 yard of fabric for inner border
- 1 1/4 yards of fabric for outer border and binding
- 4 yards of fabric for backing
- Batting (at least 64 inches x 76 inches)
- Thread to match fabrics
- Quilt ruler, rotary cutter, and cutting mat
- Sewing machine with quilting foot
Block Construction:
Step 1: Cutting:
- From the background fabric, cut:
- Thirty-six (36) squares measuring 6.5 inches x 6.5 inches
- Twelve (12) squares measuring 5 inches x 5 inches
- Twelve (12) rectangles measuring 2.5 inches x 6.5 inches (for sashing)
- From the inner border fabric, cut:
- Four (4) strips measuring 1.5 inches x width of fabric (WOF)
Step 2: Piecing the Star Blocks:
- Select 12 charm squares for the star centers. Cut each square diagonally once to create 24 triangles.
- Pair each triangle with a background 5-inch square. Sew together along the diagonal, trim seam allowance to 1/4 inch, and press open.
- Arrange the pieced triangles and squares to form a star pattern. Sew together to form 12 star blocks. Each block should measure 6.5 inches x 6.5 inches unfinished.
Step 3: Assembling the Quilt Top:
- Arrange the star blocks in a 4 x 3 layout.
- Add 2.5 inches x 6.5 inches background rectangles as sashing between the blocks, creating vertical sashing strips.
- Sew the blocks and sashing together to form three rows. Press seams toward the sashing.
- Sew the rows together, nesting seams to ensure points match where sashing meets blocks.
Step 4: Adding Borders:
- Attach the 1.5-inch inner border strips to the quilt sides first, then top and bottom. Press seams towards the borders.
Step 5: Finishing:
- Measure your quilt top to determine the size of the outer border strips needed. Cut strips accordingly and sew to the quilt edges.
- Press seams towards the outer border.
- Prepare your backing by piecing together the fabric to match the dimensions of your quilt top, and layer with batting and quilt top.
- Quilt as desired, either by hand or machine.
- Square up the quilt edges, and add binding strips cut 2.5 inches wide from the outer border fabric.
- Attach binding using your preferred method (machine or hand stitching).
